What is Yoga?Yoga is an ancient scientific system of practices that originated in India more than 5000 years ago. The word 'Yoga' in Sanskrit means “union”. Yoga aims to achieve the union of one’s body, mind and spirit. This integration of the physical body with the mind and the mind with the soul helps us to achieve a healthy, balanced and purposeful life. When all these three are in harmony, one can identify his true self and lead a life free of physical ailments, emotional turbulences and materialistic worries.
Sage Patanjali methodically brought together and compiled the philosophies and methodologies of Yoga in his “Yoga Sutras” some 2200 years ago. The origins of yoga are believed to have stemmed from the oral traditions of Yogis, where knowledge of Yoga was handed down to Shishya (student) from Guru (teacher) all the way back to the originators of Yoga, "the Rishis," who first began investigation into the nature of reality and man's inner world. Thus, legend has it that Yoga is as old as human civilization itself. Yoga has definitely stood the test of time and its relevance is increasing more than ever in this busy and stressful lifestyle of the modern world. Benefits of practicing Yoga, to site a few:
Though Yoga is widely known for its flexible postures, Yoga is much more than a physical practice. Apart from the physical benefits that Yoga brings to one’s body, the practitioner can truly feel an inner journey happening during the practice. As the body - mind awareness starts by bringing you to the present moment and as you start to ride along with the rhythm of your breath in every pose (asana), Yoga brings poise and elegance to your body and life. And it doesn’t stop when you roll the mat, but only begins to make you feel the inherent peace within. |

Some are often discouraged from practicing Yoga thinking that they are not ‘flexible’ enough. Yoga is not about being flexible, but about being aware of the strengths and weaknesses of your own body and doing a workout with the best possible mix of stretching, toning, breathing … , all done with the goal of creating a harmony between the body, mind and soul. All that matters is to practice the right way without pushing yourself too far. Honour your body and your body will thank you with good health !

What can I expect in the class?
A typical Yoga class will begin with centering you to bring your whole self to the practice, then a segment for warming up the different sections of the body, then will move on to the core of the class- the physical postures (asanas) part and will end with a relaxing breath work and meditation. And the teacher can give you their own surprises as well ! The closure of the class leaves you feeling physically stretched, mentally relaxed and calm preparing you to take on the life with a positive touch.
